“GIS and Public Transit Planning”
– Jamie Cochran –
Since late June, 2016, Jamie Cochran has served as the Transit Program Manager for the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT). With 114 small urban and rural transit systems across the state, Jamie is responsible for leading the transit group in the planning, developing, and operations of these systems. GDOT’s role in transit in these areas focus on the administration of federal transit funding, along with state and/or local funds for specific transit uses. Prior to joining GDOT, Jamie served as a transportation and community planning consultant for several national and local firms. Prior to moving to Atlanta in 2000, Jamie worked in Florida with the Florida DOT for over 18 years. From 2001 through 2012, she also served as a part-time instructor in Georgia Tech’s School of City and Regional Planning.
Jamie will be presenting some examples of how geographic information systems (GIS) analysis and mapping is critically important in the area of public transit planning for all different types of communities, ranging from large metropolitan areas, such as Atlanta as well as smaller suburban/rural places. She will also discuss a new GIS-based tool being used by transit properties around the country that assist in both decision-making and public engagement efforts.
